Ceres Challenge
« on: April 13, 2017, 04:54:55 AM »
Has any one here made it to Ceres?  In orbit or landed?  Ceres is one of the few bodies that you can't instantly arrive at by custom missions.  I'd like to challenge the message board readers to reach an orbit around Ceres and/land on the planetoid.  Doesn't matter if you start from Earth or Mars.  Please post pics here or on the Space Simulater facebook page, and post notice of your accomplishment here.
Good luck to everyone who attempts this challenge.

It's been about a week since I've posted this challenge, I'm still hoping to see some reply and pics.  I'd be interested to hear if anyone landed on Ceres.  🚀

i think I landed on an asteroid once. Not sure which one -thou- ,was a bit tricky due to the negligible gravity.

It might have been Vesta.  I'll probably go there next. On those small bodies it more of a rendezvous than a landing.  Have you tried orbiting Phobos? Doesn't really work. It just too small.

I have taken my own challenge, and I've have some luck.  I started with the Saturn V in Earth orbit. I did a burn for a Hoffman transfer to Ceres orbit.  When I arrived I was early as usual.  I did a second burn to complete the Hoffman transfer. By that time I was down to just the command module and lander.  I waited in orbit for 4 plus years to catch up to Ceres. At that point I had to turn the unlimited fuel on.  It took about 5 mins to slow from 7000m/s to 600m/s. Then I had reached orbit around Ceres.
