General Discussion / barbecue roll
« Last post by ApolloGirl on December 17, 2017, 07:00:23 PM »
The Passive Thermal Control maneuver, aka the barbecue roll, is a maneuver used by the Apollo spacecraft on its coast to the Moon. The CSM rotates along its x-axis (along the length of the body) of about one revolution per 10 minutes or slower. The in order to disperse heat from the Sun and heat up the spacecraft evenly.

Active torquing was required to maintain the desired attitude because the moment of inertia principal axes were not precisely aligned with the spacecraft axes. This was accomplished by using the rotational hand controller to create a pure torque about the roll axis, instead of using the active attitude control mode.

This maneuver was first successfully tested in Apollo 7.
In Apollo 13, the crew performed a barbecue roll before powering down the spacecraft to avoid further thermal damage to the ship.

Steam Version Beta Report 9 by Hector Melo
1. On my Third attempt for the purpose of performing a decent TLI by using the Autopilot, the autopilot throw me out of route, its

funny I know, the autopilots and checklist is our priority right now and developers are working on them, so soon it will be

possible. [possible to perform a Launch-TLI Successfully]

2. When trying to align orbit planes by using the Autopilot, in the Align MFD change by its own to align "Inverse" mode instead of

align "Normal", maybe this was the event wich caused I missed the right route to Moons Orbit. Please watch video bellow:

Thanks!

Astronautics Forum / Apollo Launch Pad Bunker????
« Last post by jcarrion on December 15, 2017, 02:25:03 PM »
Interestingly , the famous 39b/a launchpads that we all  know , house an emergency bunker below  , to be used by the astronauts in the case of an emergency (  fire ?) on the launch pad.

Thanks to a sef of pulleys , and a zip line . the 3 astronauts would winch themselves down the 110 meters height , and throught a set of tunnels/blast doors,  lock themselves inside the bunker ,until the big explosion. Remember that a fully fuelled Saturn V has roughtly 1/7th of the explosive power of an Hiroshima-type fission nuclear bomb.

When the risk of explosion would ve been over ( either beacause It actually blew up ) or the fire been put off, the crew would have been recovered with an M113 Armour Troop Carrier .

Most astronauts practiced driving the M113 tracked vehicle , so they could get back to safety . Here is some shuttle-astronaut after his training drive.

Additional item to annoyances:
(g) The Moon surface looks really weird on the verge of the lit and dark side, the some small portions of the "highlands" are lit while the surroundings are black which causes terrible flickering. It can be very well seen in the TEI scenario. Could this be remedied?

By the way - I'm starting to really believe no-one is actually reading this... :) Mighty developers, if you're reading this, please give us a sign! ;)

Steam Version Beta Report 8 by Hector Melo

1. I continue using the Auto pilots. [Mean while Trans Lunar Injection Checklist is added to the checklist menu]. once I got my spacecraft orbit aligned with the Moon's orbit by 0.04 Degrees, Suddenly, now it changes to 178.00 Degrees. {as by magic} [so it no matters if you save your progress, you must complete the procedure again? this is definitely a veil bug]. Report your Bugs here! / Program P52 doesn't do anything
« Last post by dom on December 14, 2017, 08:35:49 AM »
Like the topic said, the program P52 for orbital alignment doesn't do anything. Just the timer is running but there is no boost . Even in the tutorial nothing happens. Do I have to make the boost on my own? If so, there are not instrutctions in the tutorial.

General Discussion / Saturn V fuel vapor
« Last post by ApolloGirl on December 14, 2017, 08:10:08 AM »
Ever wondered was that steam coming out of the side of the Saturn V rocket is? If you look closely, you'll see vapor steaming out of the top of the fuel tanks hours prior to launch.

All the three stages of the Saturn V use liquid oxygen (LOX) as oxidizer. The LOX is kept liquid at about -183 degrees Celsius. To main this temperature it continuously boils off and is replenished through the fill and drain line between loading and prepressurization.
